API keys make software services easy to access, but they also tie activity back to an account and payment method. That can be sensitive with AI tools, where prompts may contain personal, financial, or business information. zkAPI has drawn attention since the Ethereum Foundation and the Open Anonymity Project announced on October 1, 2026, that its implementation is live on Ethereum mainnet.
What zkAPI Is
zkAPI is a privacy-focused way to pay for metered APIs, services that charge per request, token, task, or amount of data used. It separates the payment relationship from the service request. An AI provider, in other words, can receive a prompt and get paid without knowing who is behind the payment.
The name refers to zero-knowledge proofs, cryptographic proofs that confirm a statement is true without exposing the private information used to establish it.
How zkAPI Works
Users first deposit funds, such as ETH or USDC, into a smart-contract vault on Ethereum. A local zkAPI client then creates a proof showing the user has enough available credit and hasn’t spent that credit already. The proof doesn’t reveal the specific deposit or the user’s identity.
Once it validates the proof, the zkAPI payment server issues a short-lived API key with a spending limit. The user’s app sends its request directly to the AI provider using that temporary key. After the session ends, the provider signs a usage receipt, and the actual charge is deducted from the user’s private balance.

Why It Matters
Most API billing systems leave one company responsible for both payment records and usage records. zkAPI is intended to reduce that connection. It could be useful for AI chat, image generation, blockchain data services, VPNs, and machine-to-machine services where software agents pay for individual tasks.
Its privacy isn’t absolute. The AI provider can still see the prompt and response, and network details such as an IP address may still make sessions easier to correlate. zkAPI protects the payment link. Network privacy requires separate tools, such as Tor or a VPN.
Why People Are Talking About It Now
zkAPI stands out because it applies zero-knowledge technology to a practical use beyond cryptocurrency: private, pay-per-use access to online services. Its launch gives developers an early model for allowing users to pay for APIs without creating a permanent billing identity for every request.
